Knowing the Unknowable
Paul prays for the Ephesian believers that they would “comprehend” with all the saints the full scope of the love of Christ Jesus which “surpasses knowledge”.
“He would give you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being firmly rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the [j]saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:16-19
Have you ever asked God to reveal to you things about the love of Christ Jesus that surpasses your current knowledge of His love?
If you want to know the unknowable love of Christ you must ask for it and never stop asking, seeking and knocking and greater portions of the moral beauty of Jesus Christ will be revealed to you!!
It is part and parcel of what is yours in Christ. A fuller sight of His Beauty and Glory as your heart is filled with a sense and knowledge of His love that you never did “think” before!! Because He “is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think” Ephesians 3:20.
Knowing this insurmountable depth of the love of Christ Jesus is not for “bench warmers” that go to church and sometimes tithe.
This kind of knowledge is for those who hold nothing back, have an intimate personal and close relationship with God in Christ, are suffering for His sake, are repenting at the heart level daily (not just confessing but repenting).
As Paul puts it these saints who get some comprehension of the knowledge of the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge
1 Blessed “according to the riches of his glory”
2 Are “strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man” Eph. 3:16. The capacity of the soul to comprehend more is increased as the strength of the inner man increases. As you lower yourself in humility so also is the capacity of your soul increased to comprehend what you know is out there to know but not yet experienced.
3 Christ is in your heart by a faith that is working in every area of your life. Not that you are perfect but that there is no willful continuing in any sin. This is what it is to be rooted and grounded in love. Trials can’t shake your love to God and other’s. Satan’s lies can’t be believed by you. You love all people including your enemies whom you sincerely pray for.
4 There is a purpose of having such priceless and heavenly sweet knowledge of the love of Christ. It is so that you “might be filled with all the fulness of God.” 3:19
“a truly virtuous mind, being as it were under the sovereign dominion of love to God, does above all things seek the glory of God, and makes this his supreme, governing, and ultimate end: consisting in the expression of God’s perfections in their proper effects, and in the manifestation of God’s glory to created understandings, and the communications of the infinite fullness of God to the creature; in the creature’s highest esteem of God, love to God, and joy in God, and in the proper exercises and expressions of these. And so far as a virtuous mind exercises true virtue in benevolence to created beings, it chiefly seeks the good of the creature, consisting in its knowledge or view of God’s glory and beauty, its union with God, and conformity to him, love to him, and joy in him. And that temper or disposition of heart, that consent, union, or propensity of mind to Being in general, which appears chiefly in such exercises, is virtue, truly so called; or in other words, true grace and real holiness. And no other disposition or affection but this is of the nature of true virtue.” JE

True knowledge of the love of Christ Jesus includes something unknowable.
Meaning you know what you do know but then there is more to know of the love of Christ Jesus but you yet really don’t have a comprehension of it yet. It is possible to know more of infinite ocean of His love. Full infinite comprehension of it is not possible but as the capacity of your heart can be “enlarged” and go from one “level of glory to another“Psalm 119:32, 2 Cor. 3:18 , you can grasp more and more of the love and grace of God in Christ Jesus!
The love of Christ Jesus is like no other.
For a righteous man someone might die for them. This is a person who lives righteously. We may think them worthy of saving.
For a good man someone might dare to die. Even more so if someone was good. Not only just did what was right but gave away of their goods to the poor. This person is good and benevolent by nature if there was such a person for we are all sinners. A just, righteous and good person in our eyes from our perspective may seem worthy of dying in their place so they wouldn’t have to suffer.
The love of Christ Jesus is so different from our way of thinking that Jesus Christ dies for His enemies. People who have done him wrong. He prays for them, see the love of Christ Jesus!! “Father, forgive them”
Jesus Christ was in close communion with and love to the Father, sensing the love of God, yet when upon the cross and bearing the full punishment for our sins, Jesus Christ felt the wrath of God when God forsook him/Him, turning His back on Jesus Christ, Jesus said, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” Oh what love to God that held Him there, What love to sinners that even when feeling forsaken by His God Jesus finished the infinite labor of love and said “It is finished”. Died, rose again. and now intercedes on behalf of His Bride whom he died for so that she will be holy and blameless on the day of Christ’s second coming.

So there is in the knowledge of the love of Christ some idea of infinitude because the love of Christ Jesus is infinite in degree. Some idea of it we do get but not full comprehension.
