Christ Solomon

Often when I am writing about Solomon’s and his Song of Songs, I often use the phrase “Christ Solomon”. This may confuse some people because of the word “Christ” before Solomon when most people are used to seeing “Christ Jesus” so in this post I will clarify my meaning.

1 Why do I use the phrase 2 What is a Messiah in Hebrew? 3 Who were anointed in the OT? 4 What was anointed in the OT? 5 Why anoint people and objects? 6 What is the word Messiah in the Greek language?

1 Why do I use the phrase?

A. To more easily see an analogy between Solomon who was a Messiah and Christ Jesus who is The Messiah. B. To emphasize that who I am talking about, usually Solomon, was set apart by God for God for specific purposes.

To more easily see an analogy. I use the phrase so that you see more easily the analogies between Christ Solomon and his bride in the OT and Jesus Christ and His Bride. I could easily say, “the Messiah Solomon” or “the Messianic king Solomon” for Solomon was a Messiah but not THE Messiah, Jesus Christ.

B. To emphasize who I am talking about, usually Solomon, who was set apart by God for specific purposes. So that you don’t see Solomon as a normal person but rather chosen for sacred and holy purposes, thus the pouring of essential oils on his head by a priest and witnessed by a prophet of God. To show God’s favor on Solomon and his special calling.

C. Sometimes but not often I say Christ Solomon because it would have been the highest honor of a woman to be married to a Messiah. Because she may give birth to THE Messiah. Now Naamah gave birth to the next Messianic king, Rehoboam, who reigned at age 41 (1 Kings 14:21). Making Naamah pregnant with the next king within the first 3 months of Solomon’s second anointing and marriage that happened on the same day. (1 Chron. 29:21) in Solomon’s song of songs 3:11.

D. For example. Naamah fell in love with Christ Solomon and desired to have a closer more intimate relationship with him. In an analogy there is a similarity between both Solomon and his bride and Jesus and His bride (all believers). The similarity is that both brides desire a closer more intimate relationship with their husband/Husband. Naamah wants a closer relationship with Solomon the Christ or Solomon the Messiah seen in the words, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his lips.” “Draw me closer, let us hurry.” Song 1:2 and 1:4. In like manner the bride of Jesus (believers) desires a closer more intimate relationship with Jesus. Thus, I use the phrase “Christ Solomon” so that you could make an analogy and that I could as I write see the analogy as well to grow my love for Jesus.

2 What is a Messiah? Messiah means “anointed one”.

John Mac Arthur does a good sermon on this here, “Not a Messiah-THE Messiah

Messiah is a title. Christ is a title not a name. To say Jesus Christ is to say Jesus the anointed one. To say Jesus Christ is to say Jesus The Messiah or promised Messiah. Christ is a title given to Jesus and is not His last name. So, Jesus Christ combines His name (Jesus) with His title (Christ). Meaning Jesusthe anointed One, or Jesus Christ. Jesus is His human name as announced to Mary by the angel Gabriel (Luke 1:31), and Christ is His title, as the anointed Son of God.

3 Who were anointed in the OT?

Prophets, priest and kings were anointed with holy anointing oils in the OT. Kings 1 Samuel 9:16 ; 10:1 ; 1 Kings 1:34. Prophets were anointed like Elisha 1 Kings 19:16, 1 Chronicles 16:22. Priest were anointed. Exodus 29, Lev. 8:10-12.

4 What was anointed in the OT?

Nearly everything nonedible used in the temple was anointed, thus set apart to help reveal God’s Name and substitutionary atonement.

5 Why anoint people and objects?

What did it mean to be anointed?

Exodus 29, where the entire tabernacle was to be anointed with oil in Exodus chapter 40. And it meant, literally, “to set apart for spiritual usage, to consecrate, to identify as sacred, to take it out of the secular realm and set it apart for God.” JM

6 If you were physically anointed with holy oils in the OT then you were called a Messiah. If you spoke Greek, then you would say that Solomon was a Christ.

Why is all this important in Solomon’s Song of Songs and what does it have to do with love?

This means that the lowly slave woman fell in love with and married someone of great importance. There is huge contrast between her and him. His office and title was great, high and holy and she was basically a nobody. She would be receiving the highest honor possible to be married to Christ Solomon. This speaks to the loveliness and humility of Christ Solomon’s love. Which is similar to the Greater Lover Jesus Christ.

As Christians we have been united to by faith in and love to Jesus Christ! A higher honor than to be married to Christ Solomon. Solomon and Jesus were set apart to be kings. Solomon, king of kings. Jesus, King of kings. And on and on with the analogies.
