“My mother’s sons were angry with me and made me take care of their vineyards, My own vineyard I have neglected.” Solomon’s Song of songs 1:6
The enslaved girl is trying to win the holy affection of holy women who grew up in the holy city of Jerusalem, born and raised being taught the Torah. They are staring at her because they think she doesn’t belong next to a holy king. What does a Gentile slave have to do with a holy Jewish King and why should they not stare down at her. I mean if a holy Jewish woman were to stare down in Judgement based on appearances only. She was sunburn from slave labor in the hot sun. A clear mark that she was not one of the daughters of Jerusalem and that they shouldn’t be friends. Nor could they ever fellowship one with the other, for they would not have the most important things in live in common to delight in. Jews were blessed and Gentiles cursed by God.
If we take the view that her brother’s are holy Jews. Are they hypocrites that are angry with her. Clearly they do not love her but rather are showing their hatred of her by their harsh behavior to her. Whether justly or unjustly she is in a horrible situation. And it’s safe to say that since she is in forced labor that she doesn’t have the power or authority to change her situation.
——–
It could even be possible that these brother’s thought it was even right and appropriate to do. For them to hate their enemy and be angry with her. As Jesus said, ” You may have falsely heard, “hate your enemy.” But I tell you,
“love your enemies”. So it was accustomed for some to preach “hate your enemy” so if she was a Gentile and her brother’s were maybe self righteous Jews. That would make her the daughter of Satan for whoever believes lies about God and life has Satan as their father. What does a child of Satan have to do with a child of God. The holy daughters of Jerusalem were children of God.
She wants the holy daughters of Jerusalem to not Judge her unfit to be one with a holy Jewish King and Messiah.
She gives reason for them to accept her as one of them by giving her testimony of her current situation and feelings about it.
She tells them that she was enslaved by her Mothers brother’s. Forced to labor in the sun.
Now having this information that they didn’t have before, how would her confession of her current situation help to bring her closer to the holy daughters of Jerusalem which would likely include her handmaids?
Her words help the daughters to see her true feelings about her current situation.
Deep inside she wants to truly take care of her own vineyard. She says it with sorrow and repentance as if it were possible she would gladly take care of her vineyard. With a flame of love in her heart for what is right she says with regret and sorrow that in times past she has neglected her physical vineyard because her heart vineyard was dark and hardened.
Before she never had such sorrow for her sin, but now the conviction that God would have wanted her to take care of her vineyard but she didn’t. Sorrow for sin that we will see later all through out the poem, that it was a sorrow that brought about repentance because her vineyard ends up being very profitable in the end (chapter 8).
But how could this be? A Gentile with a love for holiness and hatred for sin?
Along with a true and holy love for YHWH comes a love for what is right and holy and a hatred of evil and sin. Thus when thinking about ones sins there is a sorrow in the heart that lead to repentance.
They would then see her as a changed person who would repent of her sinful gentile life apart from God. And would live a holy life like the daughter’s of Jerusalem were doing.
This they would have in common. Both the born again Gentile and holy Jews would have these things in common. 1 YHWH 2 Faith 3 Love
The most important things in life they would have in common, so yeah she may have been born a Gentile but in her heart she is different. Her heart has love like a holy flame in it like they do!
So don’t stare down at me due to my sunburn evil slave appearance but overlook my past and judge me according to the current feelings in my heart. And thereby accept me as a friend and sister in YHWH.
Thus our bride to be started her love and holy relationship with the daughter’s of Jerusalem. By giving them her heartfelt testimony of her past and current feelings about her brother’s enslaving her and her regretful neglect of her own vineyard.
Even if it is their fault. She still regrets that she hasn’t taken care of her vineyard.
So here we see in the beginning of the Love Poem that the bride is not only starting a relationship with the Messiah, Solomon only but she is just starting to fellowship as true loving friends rather than enemies. So the song is not only about love power to draw a husband and wife together no matter how opposite their backgrounds but it also is about the daughter’s of Jerusalem becoming closer to the bride of their Messiah and King.
Does she love holiness? Does she hate sin? Does she regret neglecting her own vineyard? Does she regret not doing her duty before YHWH? Does she have a flame in her heart that is against evil but delights in the truth?
You’ll know the LORD Jesus Christ is happy with us and see’s us going full speed ahead when we have a right view of who we are in relation to other’s and proper heart responses.
This heart full of faith and love is powerful and fearless like a mare in battle!!!
Therefore the compliment in Song 1:9 applies to not only Solomon the type but to Christ The Messiah and His Bride the Church who is also full speed ahead in their growth in Christ due to a heart full of faith and love.
Yet how much more so should our flame burn hotter for The Messiah than the brides heart did for the daughter’s of Jerusalem. How much more so should our hearts burn for The Messiah, Jesus than her heart burned for the Messiah, Solomon. For Jesus is greater than Solomon and worthy of greater love, deeper and hotter forever!
