Love is…
Do you have right and true idea’s of love?
Do you know what love is?
Do you know the essence of love?
God is love therefore to explain the nature of Divine love, what is principally requisite, is to explain the nature of love to God. For this may especially be called divine love.
Love is the soul’s relish of the supreme excellency of the divine nature inclining the heart to chose God as the chief good.
Solomon’s Song of Songs is a love poem that Solomon who was gifted with unmeasurable wisdom wrote.
Imagine a man with unmeasurable wisdom writing a love poem!
Imagine him being able to love his bride better than myriads of other men because of the unmeasurable wisdom in his mind and a unquenchable Almight and Eternal flame in his heart!
Image the skill he would have to illustrate love in a Poem!?
Okay now I would like you to get a right idea of love.
Any true idea of love must be consistent with what love is. That may sound obvious but to think about the fact that any true idea of love must be consistent with what love is, is a profound and delightful thought.
Any true idea of love gives us some an idea of God, for God is love.
A true idea of God and love are absolutely necessary in order to love God. How can you love God when you have a wrong idea of Him? A wrong idea of God is not God. Im not saying you have to know God completely for thats impossible, only Jesus was in the bosom of the Father in all Eternity. But we must have something of a right idea of God in order to love Him otherwise we love something other than God, which would then be an idol. Thus we would then provoke the Jealousy of God and we don’t want that at all!!
My goal in this blog is not to define love or even give you the best idea of love possible but do my best to help you understand one aspect of Love. Although it is better felt to be understood it could be defined as “the soul’s relish of the supreme excellency of the Divine nature inclining the heart toward God as its chief good.”
That aspect or Characteristic of Love that I would like to emphasize now is the fact that Love is Eternal.
God is Eternal. God is Love. God’s love is Eternal, therefore in order to have a right idea of God, our thought or idea of Love must include Eternality in it.
At the end of the greatest Love Poem the wisest man in the world wrote about 3,000 years ago gave us a definition of Love that included many superlatives in it.
Since the Love in the Song is an Almighty flame, the Mightiest of flames then there is no other flame more mightier than the one the two lovers shared in The Song of Songs.
When the Song says, “For love is…” we are then getting a definition of love. Read and get a right idea of love and holy jealousy.
Song of Solomon 8:6-7
6 “Put me like a seal over your heart,
Like a seal on your arm.
For love is as strong as death,
Jealousy is as severe as Sheol;
Its flashes are flashes of fire,
The very flame of the Lord.
7 “Many waters cannot quench love,
Nor will rivers overflow it;
If a man were to give all the riches of his house for love,
It would be utterly despised.”
The Song of Songs illustrates in a marriage context the unquenchable power of love and Jealousy.
Now if something was unquenchable that would have to be the greatest power, right.
A being with great power would have to get it from another more powerful being but a Being with Almighty power couldn’t get that power from another. The Being that has Almighty Power would also have to be self-sufficient and Eternal. I say Almighty power for in the Hebrew Song 8:6 is “the flame of Jah” Jah meaning the Name of God, therefore “The very flame of the Lord” NASB yet also this is the mightiest of all flames using Jah as a superlative as it often is. So we have “Almighty flame.” Light and heat to the nth degree manifested, delighted in, communicated and reciprocated.
Therefore any idea of love must include that it is an Almighty Power, Self-sufficient and Eternal. We are getting an idea of God for God is Love. The Holy Spirit is God.
And this is the love shared between two human beings!! Between the greatest type of Christ alive and his Gentile bride!
For sure when the Queen of Sheba saw Solomon in all glory, majesty, wisdom and ability to maintain justice and righteousness in the promised land, she saw God’s worthiness of praise and said this about His Love to Israel:
“Praise be to the LORD your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the LORD’s eternal love for Israel, he has made you king to maintain justice and righteousness.” 1 Kings 10:9
Love is Eternal, therefore if you understand something of Love you must also have an idea that it is Eternal.
Love is Eternal and and God is Eternal. What does It mean that God and Love are Eternal?
Eternality is a denying of God any measure of time as immensity is a denying of Him and bounds of place. Eternality is the duration of love and God’s essence. Eternity is the duration of God’s Essence, Nature or Character for Eternality is an attribute of God.
When the bride had an understanding of her Messiah and his love to her she then had an idea of love similar to how the Queen of Sheba saw king Solomon loving God’s people maintaining justice and righteousness by his matchless wisdom. So also when the bride experiences love from the shepherd, king and friend in the Love Song she also gets a taste of God’s love through the king and it is more delightful than wine.
Not only is love Eternal but it is also the most delightful experience. So love is an Eternally delightful experience.
The queen of Sheba knew the love of God to Israel would not stop. “God’s love to Solomon” would not stop 2 Sam. 7:15.
The king of peace loved the Gentile slave girl. She had in her heart the same love that he had in his. They both had an Eternal Love in their hearts. They were not Eternal but were partaking of the nature of God, for God is Love.
Now because of God’s Eternal love to Israel, God gave them a great wise and loving king who prayed for wisdom rather than riches for the good of God’s people.
Love to Israel is also love the the bride in the Song. The bride was loved by Israel’s king. As she experienced the kings love she would have also know that the love for which she was being loved by God through the king of peace, God’s beloved son, Jedidiah, the beloved in the Song, was an Eternal love.
Imagine how you would feeling knowing that the king who loved you was empowered by an Eternal Almighty flame of love and holy jealousy that couldn’t be quenched nor bought but you are freely willing to give your life for the sake of It.
Application
Let us cast aside any false ideas of love. If we may think that true love is temporary then repent in your mind of that idea, turn from it knowing it to be Eternal. Believe and delight in the fact, not doubting or wavering in the idea that true love from God that is something of Him is Eternal.
The Bride in the Song stayed holy and lovely under trials, Solomon notices and compliments her most sweetly by saying,
“Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the maidens” Song of Songs 2:2
Knowing that love is Eternal, you will also know that a love that suffers and gets more beautiful and morally excellent from it will receive a greater weight of glory in the next world. Knowing this make any suffering for Christ’s sake feel light and momentary compared to Eternally experiencing the love of God in Christ to higher and higher degree’s forever!
The bride kept her mind and heart on the love of God she was experiencing through her relationship to the greatest type of Christ alive in order for her to stay holy and blameless among thorny trials.
