Who is She? Song of Songs 1:2

Song of Songs 1:2  Let him kiss “me” with the kisses of his mouth, for your love is more delightful than wine.

The Song never mentions her name.

Where is she from?  Here are some possibilities:

  •  Some think she is A Shulamite from a nearby city called Shunem Song 6:13.  This can’t be true because then she would be a shunemmite not a shulammite.  If you are from a city of Shunem then she would be a Shunemmite.  Yet the Bride in the Love Song is called “Shulammite.”  Shulammite means princess of peace.   Her nickname is shulamite.  Peace and not enmity marks her character so much that the daughters of Jerusalem give her that glorious nickname.
  • A rose from the town or valley of Sharon Song 2:2.
  • A Shulammite from Shulem  Song 6:13
  • or Shulammite is a nickname for Peace.  Solomon is the male peace and Solyma the female.  Spurgeon  “She has been espoused to Solomon and she has taken his name and become Solyma, for such is the best rendering of the word rendered Shulammite.

Things sure about her:

  1. She is in forced labor Song 1:6
  2. Since she is in forced labor she needs redemption and to be bought back according to Jewish law.  NE 5:1-8
  3. She is terrible at taking care of her vineyard Song 2:15
  4. She doesn’t want to be judged by her sinful past Song 1:6
  5. She is not a prostitute but is being treated like one Song 1:7
  6. She is single in Chapter 1 and wants to be married to king Solomon.  Song 1:2-4
  7. She starts of ignorant about how to get close to Solomon Song 1:7 to knowing where to find him Song 6:2.
  8. The multiple experiences of his love increase her skills in bearing fruit.  Praising her for looking to him and obeying encourages her to do more of the same.  Song 4:8-9
  9. 40630502_sHer fruit bearing skills increase from
    1. a neglected vineyard in Song 1:6
    2. to a blossoming vineyard in 2:15
    3. to a full garden in 4:12-5:1
    4. to bearing fruit in high places Song 7:8
    5. to Spices on top of multiple mountains while he is away in 8:14  There are differing degrees of cultivation skills.  They get better as the song progresses so she is a woman going through 5 stages of maturity. Which correspond to the 5 stages in the NT (Babe, child, young man, strong young man, and Father 1 John 2:12-14)
  10. Where did this love to him without fear of punishment come from?
    1. Knowledge of him.  “His name”  is like perfume poured out.  Even though she was a natural born enemy she didn’t fear punishment from Solomon and his God.  She learned and believed things about who he was and represented.
    2. She had tasted of his love.  “more delightful than wine” 1:2
    3. This knowledge of him and delight in his love stirs up the flame in her.  The experience and taste of his love came from the abiding very Flame of God in her growing hotter and brighter. Song 8:6.  The source is God’s Love that is by grace and can’t be bought Song 8:7.
    4. Having this type of love makes her one the most excellent lovers loving with the most excellent love.

Another post I did on who she is, yet it only talks more about who she is by things she does and not by name.    Who is she?
